Who are adults with low literacy?

Literacy is the ability to read, write, compute, and use technology at a level that enables an individual to reach his or her full potential as a parent, employee, and community member.

In the United States, about 14% of the adult population has low literacy skills. These individuals may have difficulty finding jobs, reading medicine labels, using a computer mouse, or reading stories to their children. They may be native-born or they may be immigrants; many lack a high school diploma or GED. Adults with low literacy may read extremely slowly and with great difficulty, affecting their ability and willingness to parse anything but the simplest and clearest of texts.
